Top 10 telecom operators - How much do the largest telcos invest in their networks? Top 10 countries in terms of telecommunications investments

I have analyzed the annual reports and 10K-forms of the main telecom operators to identify their capital expenditures (CAPEX). The CAPEX represents their investments, mostly in their networks, but also in buildings, etc.

Guess which companies are in the top-10 in terms of CAPEX ? The list is below: telcos sorted by decreasing CAPEX amounts in $M.
(src: financial reports for fiscal year 2012, exchange rates used: from Google Jan 30th 2014, see exact figures at bottom of this post)
  1. AT&T 20 400
  2. NTT          19 081

  9. China Telecom 6 448
  10. British Telecom 4 264
As you can see, the big operators from the USA invest the most. European telcos come next, with China Telecom playing the outsider. The next operators, ranked 11th to 20th in our CAPEX classification are more diverse. Australia, Canada, Russia, Korea, Brasil, Netherlands...

  7. KPN 2 982
  8. MTN 2 679
  9. SK Telecom 2 660
  10. Oi 2 656
Many telcos spend a CAPEX in the 1 to 3 billion USD range... So my ranking is less interesting after the 20th operator. I provide it nevertheless below:
  1. Svyazinvest - Rostelecom 2 581
  2. Bharti Airtel 2 486
  3. Teliasonera 2 423
  4. Saudi Tel 2 354
  5. Ooredoo 1 975
  6. Rogers 1 906
  7. Telkom Indonesia 1 792
  8. Telus 1 763
  9. Singtel 1 754
  10. LG Telecom 1 595
  11. NII Holdings 1 498
  12. Hutchison Whampoa 1 475
  13. Virgin Media 1 448
  14. Axiata 1 353
  15. Etisalat 1 143
  16. Windstream 1 101
  17. CHT 1 100
  18. Turk Telekom 1 079
  19. Telekom Austria 983

  21. Turkcell 770
  22. Level 3 743
Note: For Softbank - Sprint, Vimpelcom, Korea Telecom, Svyazinvest - Rostelecomn, and Axiata, I have had to estimate the CAPEX through other means because I was not able to find the right value in the annual report or there was no annual report.
