UDP cheat sheet... The essential points in 5 seconds.

UDP is a layer 4 protocol (transport layer). It's used to transport data above IP layer.
  • UDP is not reliable: packets losses, duplication, and un-ordering are NOT detected.
  • UDP is used for DNS, SNMP, and some real-time protocols (video, voice)
  • The UDP header is one of the smallest you will ever see: only 8 bytes.
  •  The other most common transport protocol is TCP, which is reliable contrary to UDP.
