How does the edge (interconnection points) of Google's network look like?

Google needs a lot of peerings to send its content to end-users without buying too much transit and paid peering. If you want to peer with others, they need to know where they can interconnect with you... Thus, Google's presence in public interconnection points is publicly available on peeringdb.

What we can learn from the list of their IXP presence points:
  • In largest interconnection points like Amsterdam or Frankfurt, Google provides 400Gb/s connectivity
  • In other IXPs, the connectivity is mostly in the range 10-100Gb/s
  • Google is present in a lot of IXPs, all over the world.

  • By analyzing the bandwidth provided in these peering points, we have a clear idea of the traffic that Google needs to send to these markets. However, transit and paid peering bandwidth is not public... So, in some markets where Google accepts to pay to bring content to the end-users, the conclusions drawn from the analysis of peering bandwidth can be misleading.
